On 26th June 2010, 14 year old Lillian Groves was hit by a speeding car outside her home in New Addington, Croydon.
The driver of the vehicle JOHN PAGE 36 was jailed for four months on 7th July 2011 after admitting causing death by careless driving and causing death by driving uninsured. The car was not registered to Page and was travelling at 43mph in a 30mph zone on impact.
Following the collision, police searched the car he had been driving and found a half-smoked cannabis cigarette in the consol.
Page said he couldn't remember why it was there.
A blood test was taken nine hours after he was arrested.
Nine hours too late for sufficient traces of the cannabis he’d openly admitted he’d been smoking before the collision to be found in his blood stream..
He later admitted he had taken cannabis that eventful day, however the amount was deemed not enough for him to face a more serious charge of causing death while driving under the influence of drugs, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years.
"Sadly despite all the efforts of the medical teams the ending of her life was final. And at that point it seemed our lives too had come to an end. Nothing prepares you or your family for the worse scenario that you are now faced with. Arranging your daughter’s funeral, visiting your child in the chapel of rest. And spending everyday of your life visiting your child’s grave.
Driving under the influence of Drugs took away an innocent live that was waiting to be lived. Ambitions and dreams that were waiting to be fulfilled, and took away the happiness of what was once a loving family home.
Our life paths have now taken a new direction, one which wasn’t planned by any of us. One we wish we were never having to face"
